—Our Approach

The Froebel Method: play as the highest form of learning.

Friedrich Froebel invented the kindergarten and believed that children learn best through guided, purposeful play. Symmetry is the first and only center in British Columbia built on this philosophy.

Friedrich Froebel (1782–1852) was a German educator who coined the word kindergarten — literally, a "garden for children." He believed every child carries unique capabilities and that early learning should nurture the whole child: social, emotional, physical, and mental growth in balance. Rather than drilling facts, Froebel gave children a series of carefully designed materials he called gifts — wooden shapes, blocks, yarn, and spheres — that invite exploration, pattern-making, and storytelling. Through these gifts, children build the foundations of mathematics, language, and creativity without ever sitting at a desk.

At Symmetry Early Learning Center in Abbotsford, BC, we are the first and only childcare provider in the province to build our curriculum directly on the Froebel method. Children aged 30 months to 5 years engage with the gifts across three modes Froebel identified: forms of knowledge (math and science), forms of life (narrative and the world around them), and forms of beauty (symmetry, pattern, and design). This guided play develops fine motor coordination, visual discrimination, vocabulary, and the critical-thinking habits that research links to stronger kindergarten readiness and long-term academic confidence.

Unlike conventional daycare, a Froebel-based preschool treats play as earnest work. Teachers guide rather than direct, giving children freedom of expression within a structured, ordered environment. Smaller class sizes and natural materials create a calm sanctuary where young minds feel safe to explore — the very conditions Froebel believed let a child's innate symmetry unfold. For families in the Fraser Valley seeking a high-quality, philosophy-driven preschool, the Froebel method offers an alternative to standard childcare: an education rooted in wonder, balance, and the belief that how a child learns matters as much as what they learn.
